Botanical name -
Mangifera indica
Description - Mango -Mangifera indica the large evergreen, spreading tree, reaching about 50 ft height, except inflorescence all parts glabrous crowded leaves at the ends of branches coriaceous, oblong, or oblong lanceolate acute shining entire and petiolate monaceous flowers, arranged in large many flowered pubescent panicles. Fleshy disc 5 lobed, single stamen. Fruits are Drupes, large fleshy obliquely pyriform or sub-ovoid, stone compressed, fibrous, very hard.
Chemical_Constituents- Plant contains xanthoe C-glycoside homomangiferin. Leaves contain triterpenoids mangiferin, taraxerone, taraxerol, beta-sitosterol, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, glucose, galactose, arabinose, xylose, rhamnose and tannins. Different parts of the plant contain beta-sitosterol, mangiferin, protocatechuic acid, catechin, gallic, ellagic, m-trigallic acid, gallotanin, butin, fisetin, leucocyanidin and quercetin besides mangiferolic acid, isomangiferolic acid, hydroxymangiferolic acid, mangiferonic acid, hydroxymangiferonic acid, ambonic acid and ambolic acid. Unripe fruit contains polysaccharides. Blossoms contain tannin, flavones. Flowers contain essential oil. Bark contains tannin. Stem yields a gum. Resin yields a dimer and dammar along with erythrodiol. Latex contains alkenylresorcinol
Uses -
useful parts -Fruit, seeds, bark, flower, and leaves. Bark, leaves, seed are astringent in action, used in diarrhoea, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, dysentery, sprue, heart burn, leaf is carminative. Fruit is appetizer and contraindicated in all diseased conditions
