Botanical name - Coscinium fenestratum
Description -
A robust woody climbing shrub with bright yellow sap, bark yellowish, densely hairy when young, leaves leathery, shining, smooth on upper surface, slightly hairy on lower surface, roundish, with tapering tip, main nerves 5-7. Flowers minute, in small heads.
Chemical_Constituents-
Roots contain alkaloids berlambine, dihydroberlambine and noroxyhydrastinine, oxo-berberine, berberine, oxy-berberine, tetrahydro-berberine (canadine), sitosterol and stigmasterol. Stem contains protoberberine alkaloids. Stem and root contains berberine, jatrorrhizine.
Uses -
The dried stems of the plant constitute the drug, the stems contain Berberine. This drug is useful in fevers, general weakness or debility and certain types of dyspepsia. It is also considered antiseptic and is therefore, used for external application on wounds. Roots of the plant are reported to show antibiotic activity. beneficial to ophthalmopathy, inflammation, wound, ulcer, abdominal disorder, jaundice, diabetes, fever and general debility
