Botanical name - Cleome viscosa
Description -
Large, gregarious, villous shrub, up to 9 m in height with bluntly quadrangular branchlets; leaves large, 20-25 x 9-20 cm, ovate, acuminate, entire or denticulate, base cordate, hairy on both sides; flowers white, tinged with pink in terminal panicles; fruits more or less globose, drupes seated on the enlarged pink calyx, containing 1-4 pyrenes.
Chemical_Constituents-
Whole plant contains flavanone glycoside narengenin. Aerial parts contain cembranoid diterpene; aerial parts, roots, seeds contain sugars. Root and seed contains amino acids. Leaves and twigs contain diterpene cleomeolide. Flowers contain flavanol glycoside. Seeds contain coumarin-lignan cleoroiscosin D, viscosin, oil consisting of fatty acids
Uses -
Leaves rubefacient, vesicant and sudorific. Poultice of seeds efficacious in chronic painful joints. Plant: acrid, thermogenic, anthelmintic and sudorific; Root: stimulant, antiscorbutic and vermifuge; Leaf-juice : digestive and useful for otalgia; Seed : anthelmintic, carminative, constipating, febrifuge, cardiac stimulant and useful in fever, diarrhoea, worm infestations, cardiac disorders and dyspepsia.
