Botanical name - Citrus limon
Description -
Much branched, thorny shrub with spreading branches; leaves Unifoliately compound, rachis winged, leaflets elliptic-oblong, alternate, coriaceous, entire or crenulate; flowers white in short racemes; fruits large, globose; berries with thick or thin rind, pulp pale, acidic; seeds numerous, horizontal testa coriaceous.
Chemical_Constituents-
Leaves contain rutin, hesperidin, yields essential oil containing neral, geraniol and limonene. Peel contains eriocitrin, apigenin, luteolin, chryoseriol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, flavonols - limocitrin, limocitrol, sinapic acid, p-coumaric acid, scopoletin, umbelliferone, hesperidin. Peel oil contains coumarins arid psoralens.
Uses -
Lime juice useful in scurvy. Fruit in the form of pickle useful in hypertrophy of spleen. Fruits: sour, thermogenic, digestive, carminative, stomachic, laxative, anthelmintic, antiscorbutic, stimulant, antiseptic and mosquito repellent and are useful in vitiated conditions of Kapha and vata, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, constipation, anorexia, helminthiasis, scabies, fatigue, halitosis, vomiting, trembling of the limbs, hemicrania, psychopathy, pharygopathy, cough, bronchitis and heart bum.
