Botanical name - Anogeissus latifolia
Description -
Deciduous tree with smooth white bark. Leaves coriaceous. Flowers small, greenish yellow, in globose heads. Fruits beaked, winged.
Chemical_Constituents-
Roots contain flavonoid. Bark contains acids, tannin, glycosides alanine and phenylalanine. Bark and wood extractives contain flavonoid tannins. Sapwood contains ellagic acid. Heartwood contains quercetin, myricetin, trimethyl ellagic acid. Dried young leaves contain tannin, acids, and sugar.
Uses -
Sanskrit name: Dhava. Plant: in toothache, spleen enlargement, dysuria, diarrhoea, cold, cough, cholera, excessive perspiration, piles, urinary disorders, in scorpion sting and snake bite; Bark: bitter, astringent; Gum (called Ghatti or Indian gum): as tonic after delivery. Modern use : Gum: gives stable oil-in-water emulsion and patented for incorporating oil-sol, vitamin preparations; has an excellent emulsifying properties.
