Botanical name -
Oroxylum indicum
Description -
Tall or medium size tree with light greyish-brown bark. Leaves large, pinnate; leaflets ovate or elliptic. Flowers purplish, in large, erect racemes. Capsule large, sword-shaped.
Chemical Constituents-
Root bark contains ellagic acid. Stem and root bark contain flavone colouring matters namely oroxylin-A, baicalein and chrysin. Bark contains oroxylin A, chrysin, scutellarein-7-rutinoside, traces of alkaloid, tannic acid, sitosterol and galactose. Heart-wood contains prunetin and Beta-sitosterol . Leaves and stem bark contain baicalein. Seeds contain non drying bright yellow oil, glucoside tetuin, flavonoids oroxin B, oroxindin.
Use -
Root bark tonic and astringent, used in diarrhoea, dysentery, also diaphoretic and used in rheumatism. Boiled in oil, it is used in otorrhoea. Tender fruits refreshing and stomachic. Seeds purgative. Decoction of leaves given in stomachache and rheumatism. Leaves used externally for enlarged spleen. Plant antiseptic.
