Description -
Aromatic herbs with pinnatisect leaves. Flowers yellow, in compound umbels. Fruit oblong, ellipsoid, curved, greenish or yellowish-brown.
Chemical Constituents-
Leaves contain nelumboside. Essential oil of fruits contain anethole. Fruits contain xanthotoxin, alpha-amyrin, Beta- sitosterol. Best varieties contain essential oil up to 5%, The principal constituents of this oil are anethol upto 60% and fenchone up to 20%. The fruits also contain about 20% proteins and 12 to 18% of fixed oil.
Use -
Mericarps aromatic, stimulant and carminative, useful in diseases of chest and kidney. Essential oil obtained acts as mild carminative. In overdoses it is emmenagogue.
