Botanical name -
Citrus medica
Description -
An evergreen armed shrub with straggling thorny branches and smooth yellowish brown bark; leaves oblong or elliptic with acute or rounded apex, glabrous, coriaceous, pullucid-punctate, dull dark green on the upper surface; flowers white with a pinkish tinge, scented, in axillary cymes; fruits large berries, oblong or globose, fleshy, rind thick, rough, irregular or warted, yellow on ripening; seeds few and smooth.
Chemical Constituents-
Peel contains 6,7-Dimethoxy-coumarin, d-alpha-pinene, camphene, linalool, essential oil and hesperidin Oil from peel: limone, dipentene, citral.
Use -
Root: laxative, anthelmintic, diuretic and beneficial in chronic constipation, colic, strangury, renal and vesical calculi, tumours, vomiting, helmianthiasis and dental caries; Bud and Flower: astringent, stimulant, anti-emetic, appetiser, abdominal pains, asthma, cough and cold; Ripe fruit: emollient, astringent, stimulant, digestive, carminative, cardiac stimulant, hepatopathy, flatulence, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, dysentery, leprosy and skin diseases; Leaf: anodyne; Seed: stimulant, anti-inflammatory and tonic.
